Thai Airways International Public Company Limited, or THAl, has made ending violence against women part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility. It’s CHANGE NOW campaign collects loose coins or other donations from passengers to support UNIFEM’s work against violence. All domestic and international flights play a video message from Thailand’s Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, a UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador and prominent spokesperson for Saying No to violence. In a recent interview, Mr. Piyasvasti Amranand the President of THAI, talked about taking on an issue that only recently has come to the surface of public awareness in Thailand.

Why has Thai Airways become involved in Saying No to violence?

Apart from our airline business, THAI focuses on activities that enhance environmental awareness, ensure adherence to international policies and emphasize corporate social responsibility. We believe in businesses committing to ethical behaviour and contributing to sustainable economic development, while improving the quality of life of our workforce, their families and our communities. It was natural that THAI should support the Say No to Violence initiative by UNIFEM.

What messages does the airline want to send through the Change Now campaign?

This is a worthy campaign for a very worthy cause. THAI is proud to support it, and passengers can feel great knowing they are helping other human beings.

What is the significance of having HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha involved in the campaign and the issue of violence against women?

It is very important. HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha has brought this challenging social issue to the forefront in Thailand, raising awareness to a higher level and sooner than would have otherwise been possible. She has brought different parties and government agencies together around a common cause.

What have been some of the results of the campaign so far?

It has been quite successful due to the positive reactions of passengers. Our crews have also been enthusiastic supporters.

What would you stay to other businesses to get them involved in stopping
violence against women?

If one of the company’s goals is to reach out to the community, then they would do well to engage in this programme with UNIFEM. Raising awareness is key to stopping violence, especially because people still may not realize that what they do or experience is a violation.
