Madrid — The Spanish Ministry of Equality recognized UNIFEM’s work on ending gender-based violence worldwide on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. UNIFEM Executive Director Inés Alberdi received the recognition in Madrid from the Spanish Minister of Equality, Bibiana Aido.

“I would like to thank the Government of Spain for its powerful and dedicated fight for gender equality and the elimination of violence against women,” said Executive Director Alberdi when she received the recognition on behalf of UNIFEM. “Violence destroys women’s lives. UNIFEM works through empowerment to help women escape the circle of violence. This is why the UN Secretary General’s campaign, UNiTE to End Violence against Women, which UNIFEM joined through its platform for action, Say NO – UNiTE, is crucial to raise global awareness on the issue.”

The Ministry of Equality acknowledged on this day the efforts of institutions and individuals committed to the achievement of real equality, the elimination of all forms of discrimination and the eradication of violence against women. Others who received recognition included the President of the Spanish Observatory of Domestic Violence and Gender, Inmaculada Montalbán, the Director of the magazine Dona, Charo Izquierdo, and the film director Ángeles González Sinde, who is currently the Spanish Minister of Culture.
