Tournament organized by the National Taekwondo Federation
The National Taekwondo Federation which includes more than 2,000 pupils and 24 champions of world (juniors and adults) supported the 16 days campaign in Tajikistan with a 2 days-tournament held 5-6 December. The event was announced via radio and newspaper, 1,000 people attended.
The tournament was conducted by the Federation in cooperation with UN WOMEN, WHO and UNAIDS. The aim was to start a selection of candidates for the participation in the 2010 World Taekwondo Championship. 14 candidates selected will start to serve as a network of local advocates on VAW prevention.
The Federation developed and printed information materials “UNiTE to stop VAW” for dissemination at the Tournament. The Federation revised its Statute to introduce VAW prevention norms/ The revised Statute was published and disseminated among pupils and will be further passed to new pupils coming to the Federation.
The Statute stated: “We will promote relations built on mutual respect, confidence, support and commitments. We will present for our coevals an example of behavior based on non-recognition of violence as a tool for conflict and dispute resolution. We will create and promote equal opportunities for development of each individual”.
After the event the Federation drafted its action plan for 2010 to support implementation of UN SG Global Campaign UNiTe and UN WOMEN-led action Say No. The Federation intends to start collection of signatures to bring voices from different regions of Tajikistan into UN WOMEN action.
