2009 - Austria: Government and Members of Parliament sign on to Say NO

On 1 December, the Speaker of the Austrian Parliament, Ms. Barbara Prammer, held a press conference on violence against women together with the parliamentary spokespersons for gender equality and women's rights of the different parties represented in parliament. The purpose of the press conference was to raise awareness and send a clear message that the parties are united under a common goal: to ban domestic violence against women.

For the duration of the 16 days, through the initiative of Federal Minister for Women and Civil Service Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek, the exhibition "Behind Closed Doors" was shown in the Federal Chancellery.

On 10 December, Ms. Prammer invited all members of parliament and members of the government, as well as all parliamentary staff to sign up to UNIFEM's Say NO to Violence against Women initiative. All members of the Austrian government, including Chancellor Werner Faymann, as well as 79 out of 183 members of parliament signed the initiative. According to the UNIFEM National Committee, which organized the signing ceremony in parliament, a  total of 189 signatures were collected.

In a talk with UNIFEM on November 16, Prammer stressed the importance of action at the national level: "I personally think that parliaments have the biggest responsibility to fight and end violence against women nationally. Initiatives like Say NO keep reminding us of this responsibility." Read more
