Day of the African Child

Day of the African Child is an event that is marked on the 16th of June every year.

Men for Gender Equality Now- (MEGEN) has been invited by the District Children’s Officer, Kasarani District, to participate in honoring the Day of the African Child on 12th June 2010 at Marura Primary, Kariobangi. This is in order to address the plight that faces children in the district.

Kasarani district is faced with numerous child related challenges among them child labour, child neglect, sexual abuse, HIV/ AIDS, physical abuse, child trafficking among many others.

These challenges have led to an increase in child laborers, child prostitution, abandoned children living in the streets and other forms of children who need care and protection. This year’s theme is “Budgeting and Planning for the child; a collective responsibility’’.

The Area Advisory Council (AAC) has planned a funfair and other activities to be performed by children.

These activities are aimed at sensitizing the members of the public on the rights and welfare of the children from all seven locations in the district, that is: - Kasarani, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Korogocho, Kariobangi, Githurai and Ruaraka.

In light of the proposed activities, MEGEN artists have been specially invited to showcase their prowess in using theatre performances in addressing issues on children welfare and in engaging the members of the public on related issues.
