While millions of people across the globe are preparing for the One Billion Rising Campaign, the staff of the UN WOMEN Multi Country Office in India and their partners joined in the tempo on 14th February 2013 by dancing to ‘Break the Chain,’ the anthem for the campaign. The campaign calls ONE BILLION women and those who love them to WALK OUT, DANCE, RISE UP, and DEMAND an end to violence. The event began with the screening of a message for the campaign from Ms. Michelle Bachelet. Executive Director for UN Women. The post-lunch dance session helped rekindle the spirit of solidarity to fight violence against women. The day culminated with rejuvenated UN Women staff heading to the heart of Delhi to attend a One Billion Rising event.
UN Women is committed to working towards ending violence against women. In India, crimes against women are on the rise, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. There was a 7.1 per cent hike in recorded crimes against women between 2010 and 2011. UN Women in India is proactively providing support for various initiatives in India, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka, including the Secretary General’s UNiTE campaign and Safer Cities campaign. The UN Women Multi Country Office in India reiterates its deep commitment towards supporting the important values entrenched in the One Billion Rising campaign.
