Juja Public Forum

The Government of Kenya through the office of the Division Officer (D.O), Githurai, teamed up with Men for Gender Equality Now (MEGEN) to celebrateKenya's 47th  Madaraka (Independece) Day in style.

Pupils of Mwiki Primary School showcased various performances to mark 47 years since Kenya got its independence.

This celebration held on 1st June 2010 at the D.O’s office grounds was also to commemorate the Day of the African Child.

MEGEN artists congregated at the Githurai 45 bus terminus in their trade mark  red t-shirts at around 9.30am. They then proceeded to chant, sing and dance accompanied by beautiful beats of the drum.

Motorists, passersby and persons from the nearby Githurai market congregated to enjoy and join in the dances.

When a sizable crowd had converged, a skit about Domestic Violence and the rights of women was performed followed by fantastic facilitation and public engagement on how to address issues on violence against women.

Thereafter, MEGEN artists made their way to the District Officers -D.O’s office grounds chanting, singing and dancing. On their way they informed the members of the public about the public forum at the D.O’s office grounds and extending an invitation to them.

At the public forum, MEGEN artists used a combination of puppets and human artists to press on the need to address Gender Based Violence in higher education institutions like universities. The performance also showed how political and economic power is used to downplay issues of GBV and how government institutions e.g. the provincial administration especially the office of the chief is sometimes abused when such cases occur.

During his speech, the D.O Kasarani Division clarified that todays chiefs are more educated on human rights and service delivery and if anyone had information of any government official who is not performing their duty as required then they should report immediately.

Later in the day MEGEN artists performed a skit on HIV/AIDS to remind the members of the public that AIDS is real and everyone should live a positive life.

Next stop Marura Primary School Kariobangi on 12th June 2010.
