Support for the 16 Days of Action

The Winnipeg Chapter of the Canadian National Committee, UN Women, is taking part in the 2011 Global Campaign of Activism Against Gender Violence - with the theme From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women.
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign originating from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women's Global Leadership in 1991. Participants chose the dates November 25- International Day Against Violence Against Women- and December 10- International Human Rights Day- in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights. This 16-day period also highlights other significant dates including November 29, International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, December 1, World AIDS Day, and December 6, which marks the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. Over 3,700 organizations in approximately 164 countries have participated in the 16 Days Campaign since 1991!
On Day 5 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign, November 29th, we invite you to attend a special program - "GLOBAL VIOLENCE AUDIT’ of the impact of military interventions, femicides and state repression in several hot spots. The program will be at 7:00 pm, room 2M70, University of Winnipeg, with Professor Marilou McPhedran, students Chelsea Caldwell and Maddie Pearlman from the University of Winnipeg Global College with Song for Africa founder Darcy Ataman, presenting on the current global trends in violence against women and highlighting new strategic responses in different countries, including here in Winnipeg.
