In observance of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW) on 25 Nov, Help & Shelter hosted a vigil to remember and honour the lives of women and girls who have died due to domestic violence, and those still living in violence.
On this day, Help & Shelter recommitted ourselves toward supporting and empowering women to live their lives free of violence. We pledge to continue to advocate for the full implementation of policies and laws which guarantee women their fundamental right to live violent-free lives.
The vigil took place from 5-7pm at a popular recreational venue in the city. There were various messages of commitment to end violence against women. Guest speakers included the UN Resident Coordinator (Guyana), and our partners in both the NGO network and governmental organisations. The evening's highlights also included music and poetry that promoted powerful messages that abuse is wrong and never to be accepted.
Everyone was reminded to do whatever they can, however small, to end violence against women.
