White Ribbon Day Literacy Project for Children -- Altrusa International, Inc., Wellington, New Zealand

Each year on 25 November, individuals wearing white ribbons pledge to speak out against violence towards women.

On this day in 2009, the Wellington club launched a project, with the help of the Wellington community, to purchase books.  They delivered 170 books to six women refuges in the Wellington region.  In addition the Altrusa club purchased approximately 100 to 130 more books.  Domestic Violence affects children and can impact on their literary skills.  These books were donated to children living in refuges as part of the club's Christmas Literacy Project.
