Women Play Think Change - International Women's Sports Day 2010

We are hosting the 3rd International Women's Sports Day on 6th March, during and prior to the event we are conducting radio discussions on issues affecting participation of women in sport including violence against women and facilitating discussions on reproductive rights and HIV/AIDS through sports activities.

The events on the 6th will be a sports festival and a dinner gala in honor of women in sport.

Based on outcomes of our consultative and awareness raising activities during the 16 Days of Activism, we are we are raising awareness on women's right to sport in a safe environment, and using the platform to sensitize our communities and event participants on violence against women, sexual and reproductive rights as well the rights of children to a safe childhood.

We are conducting radio discussions, presentations at meetings and youth dialogs.

On this day we will launch the ' Put A Smile on My Face' campaign through which we are raising funds to establish Early Childhood Centres in three rural locations to meet the safe child care needs of rural women to protect children from vulnerability to molestation, sexual abuse and child labor. This also gives an opportunity for young mothers to return to school and to access livelihood skills and opportunities.

Mrs. Ireen Kunda Second Lady of Zambia and Matilda Mwaba, Executive Director of NOWSPAR  launched the 3rd International Women’s Sports Day under the theme “Women Play-Think- Change” in Lusaka, yesterday during a Launch Ceremony at Mika Lodge in Lusaka, Zambia.

During the launch, the Second Lady said she is aware of the challenges that girls and women face in accessing quality sports and recreation activities. And when they participate, the support they receive is limited. Yet sport is increasingly being used as a platform to address health, education, environment and other social development issues pertinent to our wellbeing.

She affirmed that “… we must support the rights of women to play; we must recognize their role in development through sport and make changes in our way of life to secure this right.”

The second lady and three Ministers' Spouses were at the launch in support of NOWSPAR's work and women's right to sport and development.

NOWSPAR promotes access to sport for women considering the empowerment that women develop through participation. Empowerment that may contribute to increasing prevention and survival of violence against women.  Articles about the launch were published on National television during the main news at 7 pm, on the morning news at 8 am and as second and third lead story in two national daily newspapers.
