YOUTH SAY NO: Summer Program for High School Students
What is the Summer Program?
In 2009 a select group of students participated in the first Summer Programme run by UN WOMEN in the ESCAP Building. This 8-week program incorporated a combination of methodologies, activities and opportunities to learn about the issue at the ground-level and learn from individuals and organizations currently working to end violence against women.
Together the students created Youth Say NO! The Student Network Against Gender-Based Violence to raise awareness about violence against women. The idea is to build a culture that promotes gender equality and human rights and to have fun doing it.
These students created a video PSA on domestic violence and an online magazine on gender issues. They decided that the Youth Say NO Network would be organized as follows:
Mission: Use media, entertainment and popular culture to promote gender sensitivity and raise awareness about violence against women
Vision: Build a community of empowered gender-sensitive youth committed to gender equality.
Goals: Raise funds and awareness
Activities: websites, videos, concerts and other social events
About www.youthsayno.org
The on-line magazine covers current affairs, popular culture, fashion, entertainment and creative writing, all from a gender-sensitive perspective. It is a magazine by youth and for youth and we welcome articles from anyone who is interested in gender equality and wants to contribute.YSN originated in Bangkok, Thailand but the issues covered here are relevant all over the world.
About the PSA
The video PSA deals with domestic violence and shows how awareness and knowledge empower individuals to take a stand against violence. It was screened for the first time on 11 December 2009 during the final ceremony, where the students presented their projects and achievements, and received their certificates of completion.
