Zonta International donates US$200,000 to UNIFEM (part of UN Women) in support of Security and Empowerment for Women and their Families: Ensuring a Gender-Responsive Humanitarian and Early Recovery Response in Haiti during the 2010-2012 Biennium.  The goal of the project is to ensure that humanitarian and recovery efforts in response to the January 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti take into account the unique needs of women and advance women’s rights; that women’s centers and women's shelters/safe houses are functioning and have the capacity to respond to women’s needs and protect their safety and rights; and that women’s shelters and organizations have adequate resources in place to respond to the increase in level of services needed for women survivors of violence.

The project is being funded through the Zonta International Strategies to End Violence against Women (ZISVAW) Fund which supports international service projects that seek to reduce the incidence of violence against women and girls.  Since the inception of the ZISVAW program in 1999, Zonta International has provided more than US$2 million to support 33 projects in more than 20 countries.
