At the conclusion of the 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, UN Women welcomes the outcome of the meeting. The Agreed Conclusions are a testimony to the commitment of Member States to do the right thing, to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.

I’m very pleased to be here today on behalf of UN Women, and at the outset let me thank the Government of Tanzania, and the Tanzania Women Judges Association (TAWJA), for organizing this important side event.

I would also like to commend TAWJA for the excellent and innovative work they have been doing to address and promote women’s rights from within the judiciary, by reaching out to the court system, as well as to the general public.

In Palestine, a Centre offers shelter and changes lives for survivors of violence

Coming from a village close to Hebron, Mayy* was 19 years old when her family threatened to kill her. She needed protection and arrived at the Mehwar Centre for the Protection and Empowerment of Women and Families.

Mayy was one of the early arrivals. She was the second woman sheltered at the Mehwar Centre, which opened in Bethlehem in 2007. Her transformation from a survivor of violence to that of a self-confident, educated woman was shaped in many ways by her time at the Centre.

Half of the world’s population, 3 billion people, still use open flames to cook for their families and to heat and light their homes. Accidents are commonplace – with the world’s most disadvantaged and vulnerable people, impoverished women and girls in developing countries, suffering more than half of all burn injuries in the world.

On the opening day of the two-week long Commission on the Status of Women— the annual gathering where countries agree on frameworks to address critical issues related to gender equality and women’s rights — UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet urged world leaders to live up to their commitments. The meeting’s focus this year is on one of the biggest global challenges, ending violence against women and girls, which affects up to seven in 10 women worldwide.
