Liberia Crisis Center for Abused Women and Children
Liberia Crisis Center for Abused Women and Children
Liberia Crisis Center for Abused Women and Children (LCC), Inc. was founded in 2005, out of concern for the increasing forms of violence, especially rape and sexual abuse against women and girls in Liberia during the 14-year Liberian civil wars, by a former refugee and survivor of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). LCC is a 501 (C) (3) nonprofit organization as defined under the United States Internal Revenue Code. It is headquartered in Maryland, USA.
LCC provides services in both rural and urban areas of Liberia. We offer a wide variety of very effective services that range from shelter, counseling services, legal assistance, child care, to mentoring, advocacy and prevention programs in schools and community in Liberia. The organization initiated the first Liberian postwar outreach program in this area – “Breaking the Silence in Communities” – in more than 35 communities, documenting over 400 cases of SGBV in 2006, and expanding LCC programs to reach women and children in rural Liberia communities. This was an achievement recognized by a ward from Women’s World Summit Foundation’s Prize for Women’s Creativity in Rural Life, Geneva Switzerland.
LCC’s mission is to prevent SGBV in families and communities and empower survivors to seek help for their overall physical health and sexual/reproductive well-being. We further facilitate their recovery psychologically from sexual violence and abuse, and assist them in achieving economic self-sufficiency.
